AussieChix is the Australian chapter of LinuxChix, aimed at providing ways for women living in Australia to meet each other, talk about, and get involved in Linux, Free Software and related things. All Aussie chix are welcome: women in Australia interested in Linux or Free Software at any level of experience. If you haven't yet started using Linux, you might be interested in some information about what it is and where to get it.

Grace Hopper Travel Scholarships for students, junior faculty and members of NGOs and non-profits

Open Source Developers Conference (Sydney, December 2008) Call for Papers

The Open Source Developers' Conference 2008 is a conference run by open source developers, for developers and business people. It covers numerous programming languages across a range of operating systems, and related topics such as business processes, licensing, and strategy. Talks vary from introductory pieces through to the deeply technical. It is a great opportunity to meet, share, and learn with like-minded individuals.

This year, the conference will be held in Sydney, Australia during the first week of December (1st - 5th). If you are an Open Source maintainer, developer or user, the organising committee would encourage you to submit a talk proposal on open source tools, solutions, languages or technologies you are working with. For more details and to submit your proposal(s), go to the Call for Papers webpage. Proposals are due June 30.

Future of the Sydney pre-SLUG meetups

As of the end of May Mary Gardiner will not be organising the Chix pre-SLUG meetups. The last one she will organise will be Friday May 30.

AussieChix event calendar now available on Google calendar

The AussieChix event calendar is now available via Google calendar. There is also an iCal feed for users of other calendar programs.

2008 Google Australia and New Zealand Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship

The Google Australia and New Zealand Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship is now open for applications from women who are undergraduates or postgraduates in a computing field with at least one year remaining. They can be enrolled at any Australian or New Zealand university and can be citizens, permanent residents, or international students.

The scholarship prize is $5000 and finalists get $1000.

AussieChix elected to Sydney Linux User Group committee for 2008

Congratulations to Anna Buttfield, Carol Hoare and Sonia Hamilton, who were elected, respectively, Vice-President, Secretary and Ordinary Committee Member of the Sydney Linux Users Group on 28th March 2008.

geekspeakr.com: Women who speak on technical topics

Brenda Wallace of LinuxChix NZ has founded geekspeakr.com, a global website where women who can speak on technical topics (not limited to Linux or Free Software) can list themselves, to assist conference organisers in finding women to speak at their conferences

SAGE-AU Call for Papers

The 16th Australian System Administrators' Conference (SAGE-AU 2008) is calling for papers and tutorials relevant to the profession of System Administration. This year their theme is Greening our Computers. They particularly encourage talks on how to make carbon-neutral data centres, working with low-power devices and similar. If you have any talks or tutorials on this kind of material, please submit them!

The call for papers closes on 31st March 2008. The conference will be held 11th–15th August 2008 at the Holiday Inn, Adelaide.
